Robust Measures of Student Growth
|
Categorical Growth and Value-Added Analysis
Some districts are looking for a normative approach to measuring growth, while others prefer to not use comparisons. For this reason, ATI has developed normative (Value-Added) and non-normative (Categorical Growth) options.
• In Value-Added Modeling Analysis (VAM) each teacher is compared to other teachers in the school and state based on student performance on two assessments (e.g., IE pre-post).
• In Categorical Growth Analysis (CGA) data on whether a teacher has maintained the expected growth in a subject area is based on a the use of a repeated measures t-test to analyze the difference between observed and expected growth.
â–¡ When observed growth is significantly greater than expected growth, the educator is classified as exceeding expected growth.
â–¡ When observed growth is significantly below expected growth, the educator is classified as not maintaining expected growth.
â–¡ When there is no statistically significant difference between observed and expected growth, the educator is classified as maintaining expected growth.
Let's take a detailed look at a CGA report for fifth grade math using two Galileo assessments.
